TikTok’s format can make new releases explode...or drag old songs from seeming obscurity to new heights of popularity. The short-form video app has become famous for dancing videos, using clips as soundtracks, and lip-syncing in creative ways. All this content needs music. If a song can go viral on TikTok, it can quickly rack up millions upon millions of views and propel the artist to stardom...if only for a little while.

Here are 10 of the top trending TikTok songs (as of August 2021).

Content Warning: Many of these songs contain explicit lyrics.

Deja Vu by Olivia Rodrigo

You could probably pick anything off of Olivia Rodrigo’s album Sour and it would be trending on TikTok. This particular song often has TikTokers dueting with themselves, pretending to be two different people.

Beggin’ by Måneskin

This tune by the 2021 Eurovision contest winners has been used for everything from dance videos to outfit demos. The original was by The Four Seasons, but this cover is thoroughly modern.

Happier Than Ever by Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish could probably cough and it would trend anywhere teens and 20-somethings hang out. While the title makes you think this song could be uplifting, this is Eilish we’re talking about. So expect a hefty dose of melancholy in these TikTok videos.

I Like Him by Princess Nokia

Does anyone ever just want one thing? I Like Him by Princess Nokia is the song you use when you have a list of favorites...especially favorite celebrity crushes.

Levitating by Dua Lipa

Even if you haven’t heard the full song, you’ve probably heard the short clip with lyrics, “You want me, I want you baby…” This clip has been used in reference to everything from toxic boyfriends to junk food to body confidence.

Kiss Me More by Doja Cat ft. SZA

The laid back disco vibe of Kiss Me More has made it one of the most popular dance videos on TikTok.

Bad Habits by Ed Sheeran

A popular video theme with this tune is, unsurprisingly, listing one’s bad habits along to the song. Ed Sheeran himself did a video about his own bad habits including junk food, alcohol, and reality TV. Stars...they really are just like us.

Stay by The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber

Some dance videos on TikTok are meant to be taken seriously...but the trend of men dancing badly to Stay by The Kid LAROI and Justin Beiber is all fun.

Industry Baby by Lil Nas X feat. Jack Harlow

Lil Nas X has been making HUGE headlines in 2021, between the release of his controversial video for MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name) and the whole Satan shoes fiasco. Like him or hate him (and we like him), the man knows how to make a splash.

Save Your Tears by The Weeknd

This 80s-inspired song from 2020 is still trending on TikTok (and everywhere else.) Videos with this tune don’t fit one format. Instead, this song is popular as a background for all sorts of creative endeavors.
